What is wheat germ?
At the centre of a grain of wheat is the wheat germ - the part of the seed that's responsible for the development and growth of the new plant sprout. This wheat germ is removed during the milling of wheat into white flour.
Why eat wheat germ?
Though only a small part of the wheat seed, the germ is a highly concentrated source of nutrients, containing many essential nutrients. The germ contains vitamins and minerals such as vitamin E and B complexes, folate, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, iron and zinc.
Wheat germ is also a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, which promote heart health by lowering cholesterol and blood pressure, are important for nervous system functioning, and help elevate mood.
Wheat germ is a good source of fibre which has many benefits including improved bowel function and may reduce the risk of developing heart disease and diabetes and prevent weight gain.
