Active transport covers any form of transport that does not require using the private motorcar. The more obvious ones are cycling and walking where 'walking' refers to all modes that use the footpath: scootering, skateboarding, rollerblading, self propelled wheelchairs and so on.
Car pooling and using public transport are also considered active modes because generally they involve a walk to and from the pick up and drop off points.
All these types of transport have added benefits of reducing carbon emissions and traffic congestion. They are also economical, sustainable and contribute to making our communities safer and more pleasant places to live in.
As a rule of thumb, people of reasonable fitness and physical ability should consider walking any journey of 2km or less and biking any journey of 6km or less.
See Metro Info website for options using public transport, including information on the buses which carry bikes.
If you participated in any events encouraging Active transport recently (e.g. Bikewise, Walk2Work Day, Go by Bike Day, cycle skills and maintenance), we’d like to hear about it. We want to ensure we are encouraging staff and their families to try more fun, healthy and enjoyable means of transport than driving the car to work every day in the most effective ways possible. Spot prizes to be won, drawn at the end of April. Visit the following link to complete the survey: http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/WEB22ADGLY2F8N. Your feedback is essential if we are to get more people “walking the talk” in the CDHB.
Are there facilities at CDHB sites where I can put my bike or have a shower?
A series of pamphlets are being developed for each of the sites with this information.
