Give biking to work and around a go – it’s often more time efficient than a car to get to and from some of our CDHB sites, or to attend to those wee jobs in the lunch break, and you’re getting some activity into the bargain.
Don't where to buy a bike or what type of bike is best? See the Bike Wise website for details.
Skills and Maintenance
“But… I’m scared of the traffic…I haven’t been on a bike in 10 years…. I don’t know how to fix a puncture..”
If this sounds like you, get in now to upskill yourself. There are some superb free cycle maintenance and cycle skill courses beging run in Christchurch until the end of April, funded by the Christchurch City Council. To register visit the MTBSkills website directly, or complete the Cycle Maintenance Registration Form and email to Hayley Shearer so if there are sufficient numbers, a course can be arranged at a CDHB site .
Alternatively if you cannot attend a course or they don't meet your needs, please complete the Barriers to Cycling Form and email to Hayley Shearer. If you’re keen on joining recreational cycle groups, add your details to this form as well.
HEAL is also looking at funding some pilot 1-on-1 intensive buddy training for people who are not confident to ride to work. If you konw of any good candidates for this work at either Princess Margaret or Christchurch Women's, please contact Hayley Shearer.
If anyone has an old bike they are willing to loan for the month to keep at a hospital site for people to book out, please contact Hayley Shearer.
