Circuits

What are circuits?

Circuits are a general fitness class, with a focus on beginners. Circuits are an effective way to develop both strength and cardio vascular fitness simultaneously in a fun and varied way. There will be music to keep you motivated and inspired throughout the 30-45 minute sessions.

Circuit sessions which cater for all levels are on offer as follows:

CDHB Site Day Time Location Instructor
Princess Margaret Hospital Monday 4.30pm Physio Gym
Riley Day Centre
Tara Martin
ChCh Public Hospital Tuesday 4.30pm Physio Gym

ChCh Public Hospital Monday 4.30pm Physio Gym

Charlotte Martin

There is a small cost per session of $5. Please allow yourself time to get there and get yourself ready, as classes will start at the time listed.

Some 'beginners only' free introductory classes are proposed if there is sufficient interest. Please contact Hayley Shearer if you want to take advantage of this opportunity or to propose alternative times/days.
At this stage, the following are proposed:

  • Wednesdays at Christchurch Hospital (4.30pm)
  • Thursdays at Princess Margaret Hospital (4.30pm)

Where possible, please contact the instructor if you plan to attend, and also if you are new.
You will need to complete the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire prior to the class. Please contact the instructor if you have any queries about this. All medical information will be kept confidential.

HEAL is looking for more people to take these classes.
If you have the appropriate qualification/experience to instruct a class, contact
Hayley Shearer.

What should I expect?

A circuit session consists of a series of exercises or stations performed in succession with small rest intervals in between. There will be a combination of resistance exercises (e.g. bicep curls and calf raises) and more “huff and puff” cardiovascular exercises (e.g. marching or jogging on the spot). You will perform that exercise for a set amount of repetitions or time (30 seconds to 2 minutes usually) before moving on to the next exercise.

What should I bring?

A towel, a water bottle and a smile. We are going to have fun!

What to wear?

Comfortable clothes to “work out” in. You will get warm, so it is not advised to wear work clothes. Appropriate footwear is essential.

What if I am not fit enough?

Don’t worry, at each station there will be an option of levels so you control the intensity of your work out. People will be around to coach you around technique and to encourage you to work at a level that is appropriate for you.
